Vaccinations for University
Know which vaccinations you need? Book your vaccinations with your local Pharmacy!
Starting university is an exciting time, but it also means sharing close spaces with hundreds or even thousands of other students. Whether you’re moving into halls, attending lectures, or travelling for a placement, staying up to date with your vaccinations helps protect you and the people around you.
Why vaccines matter at university
University students are at higher risk of catching certain infections.
Shared accommodation, nights out, packed lecture theatres, and group events all make it easier for viruses and bacteria to spread. Some illnesses, like meningitis, can be life-threatening and affect students more severely. Vaccines are one of the easiest ways to lower your risk and protect your health during your time at uni.
Key vaccines to check before starting uni
Here are the most commonly recommended vaccines for students:
- Meningitis ACWY – strongly advised for students under 25 who missed it at school
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – two doses are needed for full protection
- HPV – especially important if you missed it in school
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio booster – check if you’re up to date
- COVID-19 and flu – if eligible, these are offered free on the NHS
- Hepatitis B – may be needed for healthcare, science, or international placements
If you’re not sure what you’ve had, don’t worry — a consultation can help fill in the gaps.
Studying abroad or doing a placement?
If you’re going overseas or doing a course in healthcare, travel, or science, you may need additional vaccines. These could include:
- Rabies
- Hepatitis A or B
- TB (Tuberculosis) testing or BCG vaccine
- Typhoid or yellow fever, depending on where you’re going
Plan ahead, as some vaccines require multiple doses or take time to work.
Not sure what you’ve had? You’re not alone
Many students are unsure of their vaccination history.
Your GP may be able to help you check, or you can discuss this during a consultation. If anything is missing, it’s easy to catch up.
