Flu

What is Flu?

Flu (influenza) is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. It spreads easily and can cause serious illness, especially in vulnerable people.

How is Flu Spread?

Through coughs, sneezes, or touching contaminated surfaces. You can pass it on before symptoms even appear.

Who is at Risk?

  • Older adults (65+)
  • Pregnant women
  • Children under 5
  • People with long-term conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes)
  • Healthcare and care workers
  • Anyone with a weakened immune system

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Sudden fever and chills
  • Cough, sore throat
  • Muscle aches and fatigue
  • Headache, blocked nose
  • Occasionally nausea or diarrhoea (mainly in children)

When to Consider Vaccination:

  • If you’re in a high-risk group
  • If you live or work with vulnerable people
  • Before travelling during flu season
  • Annually, during autumn or winter months

The Vaccine:

  • Given as a jab or nasal spray
  • Updated yearly to match current flu strains
  • Helps protect against serious illness and complications
  • Takes about 2 weeks to become effective

Do

  • Get your flu vaccine each year before flu season or travel to high-risk regions
  • Consider vaccination if you’re pregnant, older, or have a long-term health condition
  • Practice good hygiene (handwashing, covering coughs) to reduce spread

Do not

  • Assume last year’s vaccine will protect you this year
  • Skip the vaccine just because you’re generally healthy
  • Travel while feeling unwell without seeking medical advice
