What is Meningitis ACWY?

Meningitis ACWY is a bacterial infection that causes swelling of the brain and spinal cord linings and can lead to sepsis (blood poisoning). It is caused by four strains of Neisseria meningitidis (A, C, W, and Y). 

How is it Spread? 

  • Through close contact, coughing, sneezing 
  • Sharing drinks, utensils, or kissing 
  • Carriers may pass it on without knowing 

Who is at Risk? 

  • Teenagers and young adults, especially university students 
  • Travellers to the meningitis belt in Africa 
  • Pilgrims attending the Hajj or Umrah 
  • Healthcare and childcare workers 
  • People with weakened immune systems 

Signs and Symptoms: 

  • High fever, headache, stiff neck 
  • Nausea, vomiting, and confusion 
  • Cold hands/feet, rapid breathing 
  • Purplish rash that won’t fade when pressed 
  • In babies: unusual crying, floppy body, refusal to feed 

When to Consider Vaccination: 

  • Before attending university or college 
  • Before travel to high-risk areas or the Hajj/Umrah 
  • If you work in healthcare or childcare 
  • If you have certain medical conditions 

The Vaccine: 

  • MenACWY vaccine (single injection) 
  • Long-lasting protection 
  • Required for Hajj/Umrah entry (certificate provided) 
  • Safe and well tolerated, with mild side effects 

Do

  • Get vaccinated if required for travel (e.g. Hajj/Umrah) or visiting areas with known outbreaks
  • Carry your vaccination certificate when travelling to countries that require it
  • Avoid crowded indoor spaces during outbreaks and maintain hygiene

Do not

  • Assume you’re covered without checking if your vaccine certificate is valid
  • Forget to check visa or entry rules that mandate proof of vaccination
  • Share personal items (e.g. drinks, utensils) in high-risk settings
